President Obama and Entrepreneurship: "The Risk-Takers, the Doers and the Makers of Things"

In my 10 years at Growthink and my 20 years in business, I have never lived nor worked through a period with as much uncertainty and negativity, as much economic depression, as much market fear, as we are living through right now.  As spirits have waxed low in the markets, I would be not candid if I did not confess that I have bouts of dispiritedness.

But when I step back and reflect on why I am doing what I'm doing, I have never been prouder of the work that Growthink does, nor more convinced of and committed to our core mission in a nutshell: To Serve The World's Entrepreneurs. And that mission has ever been more timely, more resonating, more legacy-building than it is right now.

A line in the new President's inauguration speech made me reflect on the good and very important work that we and our clients do:

"In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted -- for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things -- some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom."

One thing I know for sure is that the answers to the problems out there will not come from General Motors. They won't come from the U.S. government, or from the Chinese government, or the Russian government, or the French government. They won't come from your friendly local utility company, or your cable company, or from a law firm, or from a commentator on CNBC or The New York Times.

No, as has always been true throughout modern economic history, the only way out is the way forward -- and that way forward will be led by the country's and the world's entrepreneurs, its scientists, its engineers, and its business builders.

And what Growthink does is to serve and support these thinkers, these dreamers, these doers. This is very good and very, very important work.

We are part of the solution -- a small part for sure -- but a part nonetheless. The world has enough naysayers, enough doomsdayers, enough Chicken Littles. What it needs more of is courageous entrepreneurs and folks like us that believe in them and serve them.
