Business Plan Writers (Should) Do More Than Just Write
The following short story is the same for thousands of entrepreneurs: They come up with a business idea, realize they need to raise money to launch the business, and hire a business plan writer to create this daunting document for them. At this point, stories diverge. Some entrepreneurs benefit from the skill of their business plan writer as a consultant and others end up with a document which, though it looks clean and sounds professional, is merely a write up of their original, flawed strategy.
Writing versus Consulting
A business plan writer will understand business plan format, have a good idea of layout and style, and be able to structure information from the entrepreneur's research, bullet points, and interviews into compelling prose. Ideally, this writer should go a step further and venture into consulting territory, by asking difficult questions of the entrepreneur to help them strengthen their ideas and fine-tune their strategy. Creating polished prose before making sure the strategy is as good as it can be is a waste of time and money for the entrepreneur.
Difficult Questions You Should Be Asked
Some of the difficult questions which a business plan writer/consultant should be asking you may include the following:
"Why is your management team better qualified to take on this business opportunity than the managers of current competitors in the market?" If you've only thought through the opportunity and not how you can show evidence that you can seize the market from these incumbents, then you'll have a serious problem convincing funders and launching.
"Where do your financial assumptions come from?" Assumptions must be made in order to project anything into the future, and revenue and cost projections are no exception. It is important that the source of these assumptions be clear in the plan to show funders how rational your thinking is.
"How will your company create a long-term competitive advantage?" It is one thing to say that being first to market with a certain product or service will give short-term success, but another to show you can stop competitors from imitating and even improving on your formula after that point. A good writer/consultant will help you dig into the resources you will build up and methods you will use which competitors cannot copy easily.
If you'd rather put the document together yourself but you're thinking "How do I make a business plan?" consider using a template and also be sure to read through more of our articles available here to help you through it.
